This intertwining of vulnerability and strength is so vital to understanding the music, but also to understanding ourselves – Hiatus are such a powerful musical collective because they explore these wider universal ideas with a new and refreshing perspective. The track’s main lyrical tagline, ‘A way to get sun when your heart’s not open’, reinforces its message – to discover ways to find joy and accept love in times of pain when ‘your heart’s not open’. There are moments in which you’ll get goosebumps because the emotions being conveyed are so real, and the music envelops us in them. Nai Palm’s vocals embody this feeling of both vulnerability and strength, as she unapologetically experiments with melodic lines and adds layers of harmony which are raw, yet musically intelligent.
This track immediately feels like it’s supposed to fill us with strength and joy – it makes you want to dance and yet it’s so much more than that. Soon after, vocal harmonies and strings accompany the soulful groove that has already been established. ‘Get Sun’ opens with whoops, heavy drums and bright brass harmonies. If ‘Get Sun’ is in any way indicative of the style of the rest of the album, Mood Valiant is going to be a masterpiece. The way in which Hiatus maintain a rawness to their music, whilst also sounding polished and measured, is an incredible talent. The collaboration between Verocai’s beautiful orchestration, the soulful brass elements, the rawness of Nai Palm’s vocals, and the groove and interesting harmonic choices from the band, is overwhelming and stunning. With so much anticipation at its heels, it could be expected that the track itself may disappoint listeners – yet within the first 5 seconds the music grabs us, invites us into the band’s world, and fills us with joy and hope. ‘Get Sun’, featuring Brazilian composer, arranger and producer Arthur Verocai, was released on March 16th. Hiatus Kaiyote haven’t released music since 2015, so when it was announced that a new album would be released in June 2021, I could barely contain my excitement for the first single.
